San FranciscoBody Resonance -Workshop
based on Butoh and Organic MovementThe Body is a receptacle of time. Through an exploration down to a groundless stage of collective memories in our past, we can strike a vein of abundant resources, which can enrich the essence of our life. I want to activate these forgotten memories by concentrating on our inner core, our Ki (vital) energy and it’s circulation. Body Resonance is a key to open up the everchanging world inside and outside of us.

Movement artist Shinichi Iova-Koga and musicians Steve Adams and John Hanes enter and exit the familiar and arcane in their performance at MCAM. Steve is a renowned saxophonist and long-time member of the Rova Saxophone Quartet. John is a widely respected drummer, active in jazz, rock, blues and experimental music. Shinichi has been working in the field of improvisation since 1994 when he departed from the world of theater and fell into dance. Together, these artists have found that free improvisation works well as a format for their music and dance, allowing them the freedom to explore widely divergent areas of sound and motion while letting their innate sense shape and structure the work.

taught by Shinichi Iova-Koga
Through the repetition of form, we train our bodies to achieve particular goals. Is your end goal a picture, a form? Does the unknown have a place in your dance/work? In this workshop, various proposals and exercises are presented that challenge the idea of style and final product, without escaping form. We work rigorously to disrupt our habits, to see ourselves more completely through physical puzzles, deep listening and engaged physical conversations.WEAR: COMFORTABLE CLOTHING, LAYERS, DRESS TO MOVE

Pamela Z & Shinichi Iova-Koga
8:00pmComposer/performer Pamela Z and physical theater/dance artist Shinichi Iova-Koga will perform together in a duo evening of improvisatory explorations of sound, movement, and image. The artists will engage in sonic and visual conversations combining movement (Iova-Koga) with voice, electronics, and video (Z).
Pamela is best known for her solo works combining a wide range of vocal techniques with electronic processing, samples, gesture activated MIDI controllers, and video. Shinichi is the Artistic Director of the performance company inkBoat. He investigates body space and kinesthetic relationship, working in many forms, finding what exists outside form. The two have collaborated in various capacities in the past, but this will be a rare opportunity to see them work together in a shared evening of spontaneous collaborative works.
